Beamed across the country via radio, it was the fictional story of an alien invasion of the USA by Martians, commencing their attack in New Jersey.
Drawn in by its perceived realism many, many American listeners panicked and thought what they were listening to was real. Some mistook the news as coverage of a German invasion.

Brilliant story, and listening to it I can definitely see how some people coming in after the introduction might think it was a news story and panic.
